The Second International Scientific School for Young Scientists “Modeling and forecasting the direction of new flow of methods” have taken place in Moscow at the Institute of Water Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences. It was attended by graduate students from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Vladivostok, Omsk, Tambov, Khabarovsk and Yakutsk. The school is a joint project of the Institute of Water Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Department of Land Hydrology of the Geographical Faculty of Lomonosov Moscow State University.
TSU named after G.R. Derzhavin was presented by Maria Chernova, a PhD student of the 2nd year of study at the Department of Environmental Management and Land Management.
During the whole week leading researchers in the field of mathematical modeling of river runoff and hydrological forecasting from France, Germany, Greece, the Netherlands, Russia, Switzerland, Taiwan and the United Kingdom were giving lectures and holding seminars on the ways to solve practical problems of river flow modeling.
The school participants also had the opportunity to improve their English proficiency in their subject area, since all the lectures and seminars were held in this language.
“The Second International Scientific School helped me to master the working methods of foreign colleagues,” said Maria Chernova. – “Scientists are actively using the calibration method. It helps to reduce calculation errors when working with a large amount of information and improve the accuracy of forecasts. I will try to apply this technique for my dissertation.”
On the final day, a poster session was held at which participants presented their projects to the lecturers and invited experts. The project “Evaluation of the quality and resources of the surface flow of the Savaly River” presented by the TSU PhD studnet received positive feedback from experts and colleagues.
The main hydrological, hydrothermal and hydrochemical parameters of the river Savaly in the Tambov region have not been examined for more than 60 years, and the dynamics of the water pollution index has not been analyzed. Maria Chernova took up the development of this topic. The data obtained will allow to predict the influence of the river on land, as well as to assess the quality of water.
